Attractions in and around Augusta
Augusta, famed for its historic 108 year old Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, is
located at the mouth of the beautiful Blackwood River in the 'Cape to Cape'
region of Western Australia.
This region – between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin, where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet – is fast becoming
a very popular holiday destination mainly for its pristine beaches, wild and rugged
coastline,
dramatic cliffs and rocks, its tranquil ocean waters, award winning
vineyards, great scenic lookouts, and of course perfect weather for
windsurfing, swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, surfing and diving.
Whale watching is another great attraction, and there are many
opportunities to watch the Humpback and Southern Right whales during their
migration journeys in the months of June through September each year.
Dolphins and New Zealand Fur Seals also inhabit these waters, and there is
an abundance of bird life with a wide variety of birds, including pelicans,
black swans, red necked stints, egrets, blue wrens, silvereyes, magpies, and
a number of species of cockatoos, all which are seen along the coast, the
waterways or inland.
While holidaying in Augusta, make it a point to visit the fascinating
limestone caves nearby. Jewel Cave was only recently discovered, and it is
home to a frozen waterfall and one of the world’s longest straw stalactites
to be found in a tourist cave. There are many other intricate formations to
be found within the cave's enormous chambers, and just being inside this
'lit up' cavern is truly a delightful experience.
The Augusta Historical Museum is also a must, and here you will find
artefacts from local shipwrecks that date back to early times, as well as
displays and detailed information of families who were part of the third
European settlement in Western Australia.
